Back Of The Bus Flashbacks
We got Sean a toy school bus, around 10” long, and when you look into it through the back window it gives you weird flashbacks to middle school. I managed to take this pic with my iPhone pressed against the back. Suddenly I’m feeling braces on my teeth again and the strange feeling I left my Trapper Keeper at home. Recipe for the perfect frittata
A few days ago I bragged on Twitter that I had made the perfect frittata. Several people asked me for a picture of it, but we were too eager to eat it before we could take a photo. I made the frittata again tonight, and this time took a picture, which I thought would provide me with an excuse to post the recipe as well. So here it goes: The Perfect Frittata 1 16oz container of Egg Beaters...

Scenes From A Jewish Funeral
We buried Grandma yesterday. It was a brisk, cloudy day, but not cold by Massachusetts-in-December standards. Almost 30 people showed up: our immediate family, a number of my mom’s first cousins, and even two of my cousins from my dad’s side of the family. We we really touched by everyone’s attendence. It was only my third or fourth time to the family plot at Sharon Memorial. I...
The Genie Is Out Of The Bottle
“I’ve got something for you,” my mom said. I’d been dreading this moment my whole life. As far back as I can remember, my grandmother wore a gold ring shaped like a genie holding a black crystal ball. And we would always have the same conversation about it: “When I’m gone,” she’d say, “this ring’ll be yours.” “Thanks,...
Theresa Kaplan, 1912-2009
My dear grandmother, Theresa Goldman Kaplan, passed away this evening after a brief illness. Today was her 94-and-a-half birthday. Though she suffered a stroke two weeks ago, she remained very healthy until recently, going to yoga at the local community senior center in Maitland, Florida several times a week. She lived long enough to raise two daughters and enjoy her four grandchildren as well as...

Social Media Trends: 2009 and Beyond
Download now or preview on posterous prpd09trends.ppt (8588 KB) This afternoon I’m leading a Webinar for PRPD, the association of public radio program directors. Here are the slides I’ve put together for it. There’s nothing particularly earth-shattering about what I cover; I just try to hit some of the more interesting highlights at a broad...
Justin Timberlake, NPR Fan?
I wish I’d made a bet with someone that one day I’d see Justin Timberlake in an NPR t-shirt, because today would’ve been payday: The photo comes from a People magazine blog post about Justin’s new hair style: http://bit.ly/5oFs79 Here’s hoping we soon see Britney sporting a Car Talk baseball cap or Beyonce toting a Nina Tote n’ Bag. Place your bets now. ...
Schmap's Social Media Marketing Introduces...
This afternoon I got a tweet from someone named @AlyssaCappen that I found rather puzzling: AlyssaCappen: @acarvin here’s a ‘schmap’ for the party: http://schmap.it/knYS73?a (made at www.schmap.it = share places and events on Twitter) I’m familiar with Schmap (http://schmap.it); it’s a tool that tries to make it easier to share a customized map with friends over...
Flashback Video, 1981: HBO Goes 24/7
This afternoon I stumbled onto this 1981 ad from HBO touting the fact that the movie channel would air 24 hours a day, seven days a week: I’d completely forgotten that there once was a world where cable channels _didn’t_ broadcast 24/7. The best part is how they tout Blue Lagoon, Flash Gordon and Xanadu as reasons to tune in. If that doesn’t bring ‘em in, nothing will. ...
